January 31, 2012 RON PAUL WINS STRAW POLL HELD BY COLLEGE REPUBLICANS AT CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY The College Republicans at Central Michigan University conducted a straw poll on the campus of Central Michigan University today. The poll on the upcoming Michigan Republican presidential primary featured two questions: which candidate the participant plans on voting for and how likely he or she is to vote in the primary. In all, 101 people voted in the poll. Ron Paul came in first with 49%, followed by Mitt Romney with 36%. Rick Santorum came in third with 11%, followed by Newt Gingrich with 4% and Fred Karger with 1%. Buddy Roemer did not receive any votes. Among the 53 people who identified as likely or very likely to vote in the primary, Paul received 47%, Romney received 34%, Santorum received 13%, Gingrich received 4%, and Karger received 2%. When looking at the enthusiasm of the candidates’ supporters, Santorum had the highest enthusiasm (other than Karger’s one supporter), with 64% of his supporters identifying as somewhat or very likely to vote. 51% of Paul’s supporters identified as such, while 50% of Romney and Gingrich supporters claimed they were somewhat or very likely to vote. When considering how likely participants were to vote in Michigan’s primary, 42% said they were very likely, 11% said somewhat likely, 14% said it was a 50-50 chance, 8% said they were somewhat unlikely, and 25% said they were very unlikely to vote. “This poll was a great way for us to gauge the feelings of students here on campus. In a year where we have a hotly contested primary race, it’s good to see students getting involved in the election process and being enthusiastic about it,” said Nathan Inks, Chairman of the College Republicans. Inks went on to say, “With Michigan’s primary being early in the nomination process, our state plays a vital role in determining who will be the party’s nominee, so this poll enabled us to see which way the younger voters are leaning in this election. Young voters are becoming more involved in the political process, and it’s important for the GOP to see where they stand.” The College Republicans collected votes from various places across campus, and enthusiasm about the poll was high. Over a dozen College Republicans volunteered to conduct the poll. According to Vice Chairman Ben Greene, “We learned today that CMU students are actively involved in the political process. Students showed an eagerness to make their voices heard and to influence the outcome of the presidential election. We hope to see this level of eagerness and enthusiasm extend through the general election.” The College Republicans plan to maintain a high profile on campus throughout this crucial election year. As they have done in years past, they will be conducting voter registration drives and volunteering for candidates, both at the national and local level leading up to the election. Full results of the poll can be found here. This straw poll is not a scientific poll and is merely intended to gauge the general political leanings of the university community.
January 30, 2012 COLLEGE REPUBLICANS TO HOLD The College Republicans at Central Michigan University will be conducting a straw poll for the Republican presidential primary. The poll will be conducted on Tuesday, January 31st, 2012, on the campus of Central Michigan University. The primary polling locations will be outside of the Bovee University Center and Charles V. Park Library, but College Republicans will be roving all parts of campus to collect votes. Polls will be open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The straw poll is intended to be an informal poll which gauges which candidate the CMU community supports in the 2012 presidential race. Because Michigan will be an important state on the campaign trail, it is useful to know where the community of one of the state’s largest educational institutions stands. The poll will include two ballot questions, the first asking which candidate the respondent is likely to support and the second asking how likely the respondent is to vote in Michigan’s Republican presidential primary election on February 28. Results of the poll will be released at 5:00 pm. on Tuesday.
January 20, 2012 COLLEGE REPUBLICANS TO HOST The College Republicans at Central Michigan University will be hosting a watch party for President Obama’s 2012 State of the Union Address on Tuesday, January 24, from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in Anspach Hall, Room 169. The event aims to encourage discussion on the 2012 legislative agenda the President will outline. As President Obama enters his fourth year of serving as the chief executive of the United States, the stakes are higher than ever for the future of our great nation. The College Republicans plan to use the event as an opportunity to talk with like-minded individuals on the issues and proposals President Obama will lay before the nation. In addition to the watch party, the College Republicans will be having a general meeting before the address. The meeting will include a summary of upcoming events and information on how students can get involved in and influence the outcome of the 2012 elections. Matt Golden, chairman of the Isabella County Republican Party, will also be in attendance to inform students of ways to get involved at the local level. Pizza and soda will be provided for those in attendance.
November 9, 2011 AMERICANS FOR PROSPERITY AND AMERICAN ENERGY ALLIANCE LAUNCHES ENERGY FOR AMERICA TOUR Stop planned at CMU, calling for energy reform MT. PLEASANT, MI – Concerned with the effect of rising energy costs to Michigan’s economy, the College Republicans at Central Michigan University are co-sponsoring a stop for the Americans for Prosperity’s Energy for America Tour to highlight policies that would lower the cost of energy and help create jobs and economic prosperity. “America is a nation rich with energy resources. Unfortunately, most of our energy resources have been placed off-limits by President Obama, federal elected officials, and unelected bureaucrats,” said Scott Hagerstrom, state director of Americans for Prosperity-Michigan. “The result is gas prices above $3 a gallon at a time when Michigan faces a double-dip recession.” “The Energy for America tour is all about reducing the burden of energy prices on Michigan families by encouraging domestic exploration and production of our vast energy resources and getting government out of the free market – taxpayers should never have been on the hook for companies like Solyndra,” explained Hagerstrom. Americans for Prosperity’s Energy for America Tour will join grassroots activists and local leaders in Mount Pleasant. The Energy for America Tour bus will stop in Mount Pleasant on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 12 p.m. at Central Michigan University, corner of Anspach and Pearce Halls. To register for a tour stop or for more information, visit www.MichiganAFP.com. In addition, citizens can sign a petition at www.EnergyForAmerica.org telling Washington enough is enough — it's time to get America working again. Editor’s Note: Energy for America is a joint project of Americans for Prosperity, American Energy Alliance, and the Institute for Energy Research. Americans for Prosperity-Michigan is a statewide organization of 65,000 activists committed to strengthening our constitutional government, establishing fiscal restraint, and giving taxpayers greater control over government. We are dedicated to recruiting, training, educating and motivating grassroots activists to be effective in their own communities.

Time and again in the state legislature, Bill has proven himself to be a friend of the College Republicans, Central Michigan University, and the Mid-Michigan Community.
